Our Grain Marketing Philosophy
As our friend Dwayne Wilson from White Commercial Corporation says, grain marketing is rarely anybody’s favorite part about farming. We don’t farm because we like to watch and speculate on the markets, nor do we farm because we like the uncertain levels of revenues any given year. We farm for reasons much deeper than that. We find growers typically farm because they have a passion for the land or machinery, they have a duty to maintain a family tradition, or they just like the lifestyle farming provides. Regardless of the reason behind wanting to farm, the sustainability and the ability to keep operating year after year requires maintaining a profit margin. When profitability ends, farming ends. This is why, although often despised, grain marketing is such a crucial component of farming today.
We share the same philosophy with our clients as the one we use on our own farm when it comes to grain marketing. We encourage all of our growers to know and track their cost of production, know and track the risks specific to their farm, and to know and track their profit margin. Then and only then can a true marketing plan be designed.
Our goal is not to help every grower get the top price of the season year after year. It has never been that and it never will be that. We know achieving the highest price per ton is not the key to long term business success so we don’t get caught up in that game. Our goal is to help our growers consistently meet or exceed their profit margin requirements while only taking on the level of risk that they are comfortable with.
